Why is the April Moon named the pink moon?
The Pink Moon is a traditional name given to the full moon that occurs in April every year. Contrary to what the name might suggest, the Pink Moon does not actually appear pink in colour.
The name "Pink Moon" is derived from the blooming of pink, wild phlox flowers, which typically occurs in North America during the month of April, around the time of the full moon. The name was first used by Native American tribes who would keep track of the changing seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Observe the flowers in your local environment, do you see any pink flowers?
Different tribes had different names for the full moons depending on their location and culture. The Pink Moon is also sometimes referred to as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, or the Fish Moon, among others.
